    hi all,
I think we're overdue for an update on what's new and cooking at dropbox :-). unfortunately, in the last feature update I was a bit over-optimistic about how quickly we'd get through some features. in the last few months we've been super busy scaling many elements of dropbox: scaling client performance on large file sets, scaling infrastructure to make sure it's bulletproof and fast (we're growing at over 25% month over month(!)), scaling support, and scaling the teams working on various elements of dropbox and getting new dropboxers up to speed on all the interworkings.

after several months of bug and stability fixes, we're very excited about finally releasing the latest stable build. we're quite happy with the stability of the build, which means we'll be finally be spending more time on developing new functionality. in hopes of making more realistic predictions of what's coming up and how long it'll take, I'm going to keep the list short and limit it to what we'll likely have available for you guys to play with in the next 2-3 months (more functionality may make it out, but I'm trying to be conservative this time :), so here goes!

    on the client:
    - new Nautilus package which doesn't auto-start for every user, features new icon overlays and finally, the Linux CLI (!)
    - LAN P2P sync optimizations (i.e. dropboxes on the same network will exchange blocks locally instead of downloading from the server - we actually have this working at the office :-)
    - selective sync (i.e. the ability to exclude paths from syncing to specific computers)
    - significant performance improvements when moving around/manipulating large numbers of files (needed before we unveil the ability to sync any folder)
    - significant memory improvements (both when idle and syncing)
    - Snow Leopard support

    on the web:
    - much improved web-uploader
    - better file browser (with multi select/more intuitive actions)
    - improvements to the feed (potentially with 'undo' per feed item)
    - new user guide (the client will likely download this by default)

    on the mobile/API front:
    - the iphone app
    - non-iphone friendly mobile site
    - alpha of the dropbox API

and finally, more plans! (no promises that there will be a < 50GB plan, but we are seriously considering it and working on figuring out/testing how viable smaller plans are).

we're of course working on (or planning on) many other improvements (better shared folder controls, better ways to publicly share sets of files, group accounts, support for more mobile platforms, etc. but I don't want to over-promise :-)

With selective sync, can't you (in theory) achieve the 'watch any folder' functionality by homing the dropbox location to the root and then selectively turning off everything except what you want to sync? Or am I misunderstanding?

    @jeff,
you could, with some registry hacking, but we wouldn't recommend it ;-)

LAN P2P sync optimizations sounds awesome! I would have "needed" that feature a while ago, when I reinstalled my office notebook ;) Syncing a lot over the internet is not as good, so I had to put my box on a usb drive and transfer it over.

LAN sync sounds like a win-win for both the user (faster transfers) and Dropbox (lower bandwidth cost).

Sounds excellent!! Lan sync is exciting. Would love a smaller plan than 50gb.

Great. I can't wait for smaller plans. 10GB would be great.

The smaller plans is the only thing keeping us from upgrading. 50GB is far too much to ask everybody in our group to give up on their HDDs, but we wouldn't mind bumping it up to, say, 5GB. We'd probably pay for 10 and keep ourselves to 5. But paying for 50 and keeping ourselves to 5 is a bit much.

Technically we'd rather have this in a group account since we're all sharing one account for ease of management, but it seems group accounts are going to be a while.

I'm still waiting for additional packages >50 GB. I'm running low on space (83% and counting) and I would like to upgrade. I know that there is an unofficial 100GB program but it would be nice to see it made official. Funnily it shows an "upgrade" button on my account but there is nothing that I could upgrade to ...

Hey guys. Really looking forward to selective and LAN sync functionality!

In regards to the mobile client, are you guys going to be working on a Windows Mobile client yourselves, or is that going to be down to 3rd party developers via the API? I only ask because I see you are working on a dedicated iPhone client. It narks be a tiny bit (and i dont want to get into an Apple vs Microsoft row) that people target apps at the iPhone cos of it its high profile nature when im sure that there are currently more win mobile devices in circulation than iPhones.

If im wrong, slap me and i'll be quiet. :D

curious about the LAN sync. my computers are all wireless and AP isolation on the router is turned on, and I've disabled as many networking services as I can on the computers themselves. would it still be recognized as being on the same LAN and to transfer blocks locally?

I know about the link. I would like to have it official and maybe a few more options for the future.

PS: And I still think that there should be a little rebate for ordering twice the space and not just twice the price.
PPS: Just checked: it's even slightly more expensive to order 100 GB than 2x 50 GB (exactly 1 $). So that's clearly just an intermediate solution and not really thought-through yet.

That makes sense. Humm, it should be cheaper.

Arash drops by and nonchalantly causes a rash of ill-advised and panicky price drops for the clients of, and the wholesale cancellation of vacations for the staff at, all the other sync and backup companies.

    Cruel. :)

Everyone that's talking about account sizes: Please remember that there's going to be a hard limit to how low they can go, as it's on Amazon's S3 cloud, and there's barely any appreciable markup on the space from DropBox. I think 50GB is something like $7.50 *just* for storage, never mind all the transfer fees for upload and download..

50GB was likely picked due to all the folks who need more that 2GB but will use far less than 50GB, thus helping keep the S3 costs lower for them to balance things out. If they were to offer a 10GB plan, and people who buy it utilize it to 95+%, it would likely kill any profit they are getting.

Need sorting functions of our photos in the Gallery View!
Preferably by file/folder name (ascending and descending).

Will LAN P2P support any amount of files not being limited to 2GB for online synching?

Dropbox will attract lot more paid users if they offered 10GB, 20GB, and even Unlimited plans at higher costs.

"Will LAN P2P support any amount of files not being limited to 2GB for online synching?"

I'd doubt it as they still would end up on the S3. This was basically for transfer speed improvement as far as I can tell from everything I've read here about it.

"Dropbox will attract lot more paid users if they offered 10GB, 20GB, and even Unlimited plans at higher costs."

I suspect that the math simply can't work at less than 50GB. They need to keep overall utilization percentages (by plan) low in order to be profitable.

Yeah, I'd go for an unlimited plan as I hate worrying about space.
