I've been using Dropbox for a while now and it's awesome.
However, the default icons used in Nautilus to display the status of each file do not blend in well with the rest of the interface.

I've made two sets of replacement status emblems for Linux systems which look quite good with most themes.

    -----

    Ubuntu/Elementary style:

    v1.0 - Initial public release

    Tango/Gnome style:

    v2.0 Update - New style!

    == Download Tango/Gnome Dropbox status icons (v2.0) ==

    Installation instructions:
    1. Download the file linked to above
    2. Unpack it somewhere
    3. Double click on the 'Install.sh' file inside
    4. Enter password when prompted

The files you unpacked may then then be deleted if you want.

If the icons don't show up, it may be necessary to log out or reboot.

    Removal instructions:
    1. Follow steps 1-2 above, if necessary
    2. Double click on the 'Uninstall.sh' file inside
    4. Enter password when prompted

Monochrome notification area icons for Ubuntu

Requires Ubuntu 10.04 and the experimental build!

== Download Dropbox app indicator icons for Light panels ==

    Installation instructions
    1. Download the file linked to above
    2. Unpack the icons you want in /home/USER/.dropbox-dist/icons/
    3. Restart Dropbox

    Extra - Alternative icons
These are some alternative icons which I have made upon request.
You'll have to rename these (remove the _something part) while installing.

    Extra - Humanity set
This set looks better than the one above if you use Humanity panel icons instead of Ubuntu-Mono (The default). They're more gray and outline-ish.

    ------

Extra - Make your Dropbox folder look like a Tangofied version of the Dropbox logo

    [ Preview ]

== Download Dropbox icon (For use as folder icon) ==

    Installation instructions:
    1. Download the file linked to above
    2. Put it somewhere (You can't move or delete the file later without reinstalling)
    3. Go to your home folder
    4. Right click on your Dropbox folder and choose 'Properties'
    5. Click on the folder icon in the newly opened window
    6. Browse to the location where you put the downloaded file
    7. Select the file and click 'Open'

Done! You can now close the Properties dialogue.

    ------

Extra! - Here's the tangofied Dropbox logo in all common icon sizes!

They're not very useful at the moment, because Dropbox doesn't allow replacing the icons within the application.
However, the included 'Install_Overwrite.sh' file will replace the default icon in the applications menu and in the right click menu.

Workaround to make Nautilus scale the Dropbox folder nicely. (2 files, put inside your home folder) It actually hides the real folder and replaces it with a link. This means that there is no emblem on it and no special menu items. All files inside are not affected though.

    those looks pretty awesome :-)
though we actually have new icon overlays on the way (they'll be in the new version of the nautilus extension which we release in the next week or so)

I've noticed the update and I really like the new icon overlays.
However, they don't blend in well with the other icons I use. I don't blame you for that though.

I've made some improvements to the icons I posted about 3 weeks ago and have decided to post them just in case anyone find them useful. A preview is available here.

I think I'm going to install those. :P I kind of liked the old icons, but I like these better. And I really don't like the new regular ones... the green looks so washed out, I actually thought the window had gone greyscale for a moment.

Hmm. But I'm having trouble replacing the emblems. Are the new Dropbox emblems in a different place?

The default emblems have always been located in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/64x64/emblems
However, you shouldn't have to replace those as the scalable ones will be used unless the size is very close to 64x64 (Which won't happen no matter how much you zoom in).

Edit: Try downloading the new version. It will clear the icon cache so that the old icons aren't left there. Try rebooting or switching icon theme afterwards to ensure that it notices the new icons.

Ah, that did it. I already tried running gtk-update-icon-cache, but I didn't know I would also have to delete it.

Cool, these are much more colorful.

I've recently changed the icon of my Dropbox folder into a Tango-style version of the dropbox box logo.
    It looks like this.

[Instructions and download moved to first post]

It's an .svg, but it doesn't look very good at really small sizes.
I wish I knew how to make nautilus use an icon included in an icon theme as a folder icon. This would allow me to add a slightly different icon for each size (It would look a lot better).

A new version has been uploaded (See first post).
Everything is now contained within one post and includes installation instructions.
    Any feedback is welcome.

Charles, those icons look great. Would be great to see them being used in the official package, but I guess this will not happen :(

    Hi
First thank you for the nice job. I wanted to download also the folder icon, but the link is the same as for the status icons and I didn't find any folder icon in that file.
    Thank you

I've uploaded the Dropbox icon I made in the most common icon sizes (See the first post) and included a simple installation script (It overwrites some files and the effects can't be easily undone).

There's currently no way to make them show up within the Dropbox application itself. They will only show up in the applications menu and right click menu (Within the Dropbox folder).

You are free too use any of my icons as you like. But don't claim to have made them yourself.

Is there a way to make the dropbox icons smaller? My own linux icons are hardly recognisable as being a document/a map/ a pdf document.

    Update:
8x8 icons have been added to the set. (See first post for preview and download)

    @Nick v.
Are the overlays overlapping the icons too much?

I've hacked together a special version of my set which will bump the icon size down a little bit:

This seems a really good work. Why dropbox guys don't adopt it?

I have all of this installed and appreciate all of the hard work you have put into this. I do however have one question. I have added a bookmark to my Dropbox folder in Nautilus and it shows as a normal folder under my Places menu. Is there a way to make the bookmark use that nice Icon you created for the Dropbox folder?

    @Joseph C.

I'm well aware of the problem.
I've been looking for a solution but I can't find one. Nautilus seems to use special icons for entries in ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs if they are added to the bookmarks menu.
However, adding my own entry and supplying an icon with the 'right' name in the correct folder doesn't work.
It appears to be hard coded into some component.

I've tried downloading the Nautilus source code and checking it, but I found nothing. It's probably within something else.

Maybe something can be done by using some sort of extension, but my coding skills are limited (I can write simple scripts and change minor things in other people's code, but that's it).

    HELLo!

What about moving that file/folder into Dropbox, and then adding a symlink in the original location? Should do the trick.

    @N. N.

I sincerely believe that you have misunderstood the question. It was about why a generic folder icon is used in the bookmarks pane/places menu even though a custom one had been assigned to the bookmarked folder.

    Update:

The 24x24 and 22x22 sizes look more clear now and the 16x16 icons were redone to remove some 'jaggy' edges.
As always, the preview has been updated.

(I finally got some free time.)

Small emblems at last! Many thanks. Why someone would design the emblems to be so big they cover the file icon is beyond me.
