   Hi everyone!

   Even though the holidays have passed, we're really stoked to give you guys one more present -- a new experimental release! Under the wrapping you'll find a bunch of new toys, including a brand new Camera Upload feature. Here are the release notes:

   • Automatically uploads photos and videos in the background using Wi-Fi or data plan
   • 500MB of free space on first photo uploaded automatically
   • Upload files of any size (no more 180 MB limit!)
   • Support for resuming file uploads when there are network issues
   • Various performance improvements & bug fixes

   During this beta period, we are also offering additional free space to test automatic uploading of photos and videos. For every 500MB of photos and videos automatically uploaded, you'll receive another 500MB space bonus, up to 5GB total (including the initial 500MB space).

   [Update: this space is not separate from 5GB given for uploading on our desktop clients. Uploading from either desktop clients or Android app will count towards the same 5GB free space.]

   Is the bonus space in addition to that earned using the desktop beta? or is it a total of 5GB for using either?

   This is really cool feature and I can see great implications for using this to defend yourself in court. Even if your SD card were to disappear after being detained video evidence could be retained in dropbox. I will be doing testing with this.

   I got the first 500 MB from uploading pictures from my phone. Do I need to upload all the other pictures from my phone as well, to get the 4,5GB? I use Android 2.3 and Ubuntu Linux 11.10 as OS.

   Is the space earned additional to what we have earned on the desktop? I uploaded stuff from my phone and I didn't get the 500 added quota.

    Automatic upload from a camera shot worked perfectly - HTC Thunderbolt running 2.3.4. I might end up turning off the automatic upload, and using selective camera shot upload. I take a lot of shots that I don't necessarily want to keep, and with automatic upload enabled I would have to remember to delete the unwanted shots from two places.

    I have to say that since I first used dropbox I never used my flash memory after that, and everyday dropbox impresses me more and more. I've tried Box, Ubuntu1, and SkyDrive, but I have to say I sticked with dropbox for it is the best available. Great work guys and thanks for the extra space.

    Alex, this new functionality is about to replace DropSnap, an app that allowed pretty much the same that I've been using for a few months now. However, DropSnap allows setting sets of sources/destinations pairs, so that you can, say, have the Screenshots directory synced in addition to Camera Uploads.

    Any chance Dropbox would get this functionality too?

    Like the new feature..... Go dropbox your doing some really useful features..... only thing is that the additional quota has not come and now I'm being told I have exceeded my allowance!

    How am I meant to get the additional upto 5gb allowance? Please advise so I can fully test this new feature, thanks

    @Carsten K, @Eddie T and all who did NOT get the automatic 500mb on upload. You MUST enable the Camera Upload feature (click on your menu button on your phone and check Settings). Just doing a regular upload will NOT do the trick. Once you enable it Dropbox will automatically create a new folder called Camera uploads on your account and start to upload from your phone. If it does not do this, just take a picture after you enable the Camera Upload feature and it will all be golden!

    Unfortunately Ashley, that is not true. I do have the Camera Upload feature enabled (it was by default) and it did create the Camera Uploads folder and it did upload the pictures there automagicaly. Still no 500MB. And disabling, reenabling, taking another picture doesn't do the trick either :(

    Btw, autouploading videos doesn't work in this build. I just took 2 videos and none of them got uploaded to Dropbox after an hour.

    Using Epic 4G Touch SGSII on Sprint.

    Edit: Ah, apparently Dropbox won't upload with like <20% battery. Plugging the phone in resumes the upload process.

    @Ashley, it was already set to that, and afterwards I took a picture for a added measure. I watched it upload, but no added space. What I should I do?
    I already received my 4.5 from the desktop uploads, is maybe that why I'm not receiving it?
    EDIT: The OP was updated, yup, it includes the desktop version.

    Will the extra space disappear after the beta period is over? If yes, what will happen to the data (pictures/video etc) using that space? will they just be deleted?

    How long does it take to receive the extra 500 MB? Because I followed the steps and didn't get anything yet. Also the extra 500 are cumulative with the desktop received extra?

    Also, why is there no upload indication in the status bar? I am really missing this feature. I am using some apps to upload files via dropbox and I don't know anymore when the upload is finished...
