Good news, everyone! Some of you may remember us making recent changes to your Sharing page, and wondered what they were for. Truth is, we were laying the foundation for a brand new feature that we've just finished:

Any file or folder in your Dropbox is now linkable!

These links are presented in a snazzy new web view that allows people to view or play your shared files straight from their browser.

Here's an example of a single file

And an example of a folder

After you've made your link, you can then share it with others by pasting the link, or via Twitter and Facebook. Also, other users visiting your link can copy its contents straight to their Dropbox. Pretty sweet, huh?

    Here's how it works:

    1. From the web or desktop app, pull up the context menu of the file/folder you'd like to share, then click 'Get shareable link'

    2. This takes you to the page view of the file/folder you're linking, and you can grab the link from the top of the page.

    3. You can then share this link with anyone!

    Some more info:

    • This will only work with Dropbox clients 0.8 or higher and the feature is currently in beta. You'll have to restart your client to enable the feature. You can get it here
    • All your links are viewable from the 'Linked Items' tab on you Sharing page. You can even make shared folder links, which will be viewable from both tabs.
    • The public folder will still work as it always has.
    • Office files, pdfs, code files, etc. are all displayed using custom viewers (or scribd, when appropriate)
    • On the horizon: password protection and expiration, other cool stuff

Special thanks to Trevor, Arash, Drew, the web team, the server team and Albert for making this possible. Enjoy the sharing model!

Hey everyone! Super excited that we get to share this with you! One item to note, unlike the Public folder, files and folders do not have a sharing model link (can't be found) until you choose to share them.

Congratulation and many thanks for your continous work on improvements.
But shouldn't you have to wait with this posting until 0.8 is downloadable? ;-)

Nice work, Dropbox. One little bug: I am able to attempt to create a shareable link from my entire Dropbox in Windows, but the website that is opening gives a 404. Think you should disable the possibility to create a shareable link for the whole Dropbox.

Sorry, but how does this work? None of my items -- on web interface -- have 'get shareable link' in context menu.

SOLVED: I had to quit dropbox, logout of website, then relaunch. NOW it works!

Please add option to instantly share folder in your PUBLIC dir too, i would like to right click, select "copy link" and get auto-generated index file for that folder

edit: Whoah, nvm i thought it will work with 0.7.x, installing 0.8.x right now, sorry.

    @Ze'ev G.
Do you have one of the newer builds? As the post states, "This will only work with Dropbox clients 0.8 or higher."

    - Creating a sharing link should create a one line description in the 'events' tab
    - Deleting a file that was shared could also create a one line description 'the file XXX was deleted and is no longer shared'

Great feature. What are your plans regarding the iPhone app? I mostly share things while on-the-go

It sounds and looks great. BUT, I hope it's all secure... I mean, there's no way people can underhandedly get at other files because of this, is there?

The links comprise of 15-digit alpha-numeric characters in normal links, and if you shorten it with db.tt then there are still six random characters. And the links are only available if you generate them. So it's pretty secure, much more than the Public folder, which only has a 7 digit token at most atm which is the same for all files :)
