    Hi guys,

The main differences between this build (0.7.x) and the build you can download on the front page (0.6.x) are many memory/performance fixes, a toolbar button on Mac OS X and Windows 2000/XP, as well as LAN sync.

    0.7.58
    - LAN Sync speed improved by 10x when transferring many small files

    0.7.56
    - fixed a bug with LAN sync in 0.7.55
    - icon overlays shouldn't "go away" as often in Snow Leopard

    0.7.55
    - finder plugin in tiger/leopard should be more reliable
    - if you use path finder, you shouldn't have any more hangs related to dropbox, and the dropbox context menu should now work fine. let us know if you are still having issues!
    - potential p2p performance improvements
    - fixes to incorrect status reporting
    - more stability fixes

    0.7.54
    - Icon Overlays on windows should be more responsive (i.e., when dragging a new file into your dropbox, you should now see the blue syncing icon followed by the green check as expected)
    - Fixed a potential crash in Explorer related to Dropbox (let us know if your windows explorer still crashes/hangs on this build!)
    - New button art for the toolbar button on Tiger (OS X 10.4)
    - As always, other small stability fixes

    0.7.53
    - Fix to regression in Linux which would cause Dropbox to repeatedly pop up install dialogs
    - Fix to CLI regression
    - Updated Dropbox to use latest version of Growl

- Small stability fixes

    Windows: http://dl-web.dropbox.com/u/17/Dropbox%200.7.58.exe
    Mac OS X: http://dl-web.dropbox.com/u/17/Dropbox%200.7.58.dmg
    Linux x86_64: http://dl-web.dropbox.com/u/17/dropbox-lnx.x86_64-0.7.58.tar.gz
    Linux x86: http://dl-web.dropbox.com/u/17/dropbox-lnx.x86-0.7.58.tar.gz

For an error free install on Linux, first make sure Dropbox is stopped by choosing "Stop Dropbox" from the tray icon menu. Then run the following commands in your home directory:

    $ rm -r .dropbox-dist/
    $ tar xzf dropbox-lnx.x86-0.7.56.tar.gz # or x86_64

if it's important that your dropbox is stable/reliable, we recommend running the latest stable build (0.6.570 http://www.dropbox.com/install).

Do you ever sleep, Arash? Glad to see the updates continuing to come, but when will 0.7 hit stable?

And I ask again, what's the difference between 0.6.x and 0.7.x?

    Ted,

0.6x doesn't have lan sync functionality, and doesn't have many of the more aggressive memory and cpu tuning changes that we've made to 0.7x

my best guess for when it goes stable is ~ 4 weeks :-).

the core sync code should be very stable now - more so than the the 0.6 branch. the majority of what we have left with this build is minor OS integration issues and polish work to make it auto-upgrade ready for the world.

@Arash: Will synching of opened Office-2007-files work then? Because for me this is really important as I often work the whole day on the same document. With 0.7.28 it synched my (and others) files correctly but since then it doesn't.

    Anything else works great! :)

Still, the context menu items do not appear on my Leopard 10.6.1 Did I forget to delete anything besides the main app before installing the new version?

Dropbox 0.7.53, Mac OS X 10.4.11 (fully updated), on m'Smurf...

Seems to be working so far. The initial launch took much longer than .50 to come up with the auth dialog. The only feedback that it was doing anything was the SPOD (usually there's no feedback at all, except for the Finder coming forward suddenly).

Donno if you need to see these, but my console log sayeth:

Does this fix the Finder freezing issues that were introduced somewhere around 0.7.45?

I've had to go back to 0.7.44 to have a stable version on Snow Leopard.

Dropbox 0.7.53, Mac OS X 10.4.11 (fully updated), on m'Smurf...

For the first time, I'm now seeing Dropbox's drop down menu in the Finder window toolbar (not to be confused with the main menu bar icon). But this menu only contains one item. A menu that contains only one item should be a button, not a menu. It would be helpful if there were a pref to make it go away -- I already have a bunch of applets in that Finder window toolbar and now Dropbox's menu is pushing one off. Not good.

Really, the best implementation would be for Dropbox to put an alias of the Dropbox folder into the Finder window sidebar. Leave the toolbar for tools!

Something different with each update. Still no contextual menu item with Dropbox 7.5.3 on my core 2 duo MacBook (OS X 10.6.1), but it is present on my G4 iMac (OS X 10.4.1). The dropbox icons are no longer present on items in Dropbox on the MacBook, but are present on iMac.

Upgraded to 0.7.53 on 3 macs w/o issues. In fact it lowered my indexing time.. Good, Good. On my other 4 machines, I will upgrade when I get a chance. (they are 50 miles away)

    Dan C,
the toolbar button has more options when you have a file in your Dropbox selected (it's another way into the context menu options that's easier for some people to find). If you don't like it/don't use it, you can make the finder toolbar button go away, by holding down command and dragging it off the toolbar. Alternatively, you can control-click/right-click the toolbar itself, and choose "customize toolbar", and then rearrange items/remove items as you please. If the Dropbox button is not customizing properly, or staying away when you've removed it, this is a bug and let us know :)

Why on earth I have a 0.7.8 version installed if it doesn't even exist???

I didn't realize there was a toolbar button for Dropbox until it was mentioned above by Dan C. Just never looked for it. Unlike the contextual menu for Dropbox, which does not appear in my MacBook running on OS X 10.6.1, the dropbox toolbar button is present and functions.

    Cristin,

Out build numbers are literal so 0.7.8 is earlier than 0.7.12 which is earlier than 0.7.50

Arash mentioned that 0.7 goes stable in about 4 weeks. Will that include selective sync?

    @Yoshihiko,

Extensive public beta testing would be required for such a grand feature. They'd have to roll it out in another beta release soon here. I doubt it's coming before v1.0 myself.

Well, 0.7.50 had no contextual Dropbox menu in Explorer on Windows 7, and now it does in 0.7.53, but I lost it from OSX Snow Leopard (which had it fine in 0.7.50)

    :P

Other than that everything seems fine.

Something most peculiar occurred after I updated PathFinder to version 5.5.5. This update is supposed to fix the services menu in PathFinder - which, indeed, it does - as well as now having all of the services appear in the contextual menu. But somehow, it also fixed the problems I have been having with Dropbox. Now the Dropbox Contextual menu does appear when I control-click on any item in my Dropbox Folder and the Dropbox icons have reappeared in the items in the Dropbox. Why would fixing something in PathFinder also fix something in Dropbox?

I have successfully installd DropBox 0.7.53 on 2 Macs with Snow Leopard and 1 Mac with Leopard PPC, 2 PCs with Windows XP and 1 with Windows 7. However, neither 0.7.52 or 0.7.53 will install on my 2 Virtual Machines running Windows 2000 on Macs with Parallels (sorry to be using such old OS but I really did not feel like shelling out $$$ to Microsoft to install licensed versions of XP just to run the occasional PC program). Mind you 0.7.43 is running fine on these machines. In fact, fortunately, when the DropBox installer failed to update to these later versions, it left my old version of DropBox intact. Good work on that -- an installer that is smart enough to know it won't work and quit before it frags the older version. I am reluctant to uninstall the working old versions in order to install the new ones, but if you think that is the problem, I will do it if you advise to do so. Any suggestions?

Version 0.7.50 and 0.7.53 no longer display the dropbox icon in my system tray on my Windows XP; seems to be working fine otherwise. This only happens on one of three computers in my place. Any ideas what I can do to fix?

Put .53 through a little benchmarking today (see here for previous results).

Again performance improved slightly. Wallclock time for the transfer was 108 seconds (down from 115). Reported speed was around 8200-9300 kB/s, much more in line with gkrellm's 4500-9000 kB/s. Still not 100% accurate, real speed (file size / wallclock time) was about 5700 kB/s.

CPU usage didn't change much, 35-40% on the sending side, 70-78% on the receiving side. There's 20% headroom, use it (and that's just on one of the 4 cores)! :)

LAN sync is incredibly slow in .53 for me, averaging around 7-12kbps. When I have it turned off and it syncs with the web I consistently get around 800kbps. This is just starting up the program on a computer that hasn't had Dropbox before in my home network. Both computers are Windows 7 64-bit.
