Normally it works, but sometime people tell me the same. It is not opening. Maybe there is firewalls that block access to DB?!

    hi guys,
we don't know of any issues with public link serving (it sounds like a potential routing issue from some ISP's). can you give me an example of a link that doesn't work? also, can you open a terminal and type 'host dl.getdropbox.com'?

    hi troy,
can you try going to http://dl5.getdropbox.com/u/270183/OcotberNewsletter1.pdf and let me know if that works? if not, can you try dl1 through dl10?

from my end they all seem to work (i.e. the images show up fine on your site). what ISP are you using at your home/office?

The link I gave works, but then on that page, try to click on the pictures of the newsletters themselves - they don't work

Well they work for me. Really sounds like a network routing issue somewhere between you and the Dropbox servers.

Ever since 2 days ago, non of the public link works. Can someone try if http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1475433/nibru_2.jpg works? For me the page just load as a text saying "http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1475433/nibru_2.jpg"

The link posted above by Troy doesn't work, error message is
"SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length.

    (Error code: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long)"

    Hello Andrew,
if you do a ping on dl.getdropbox.com which IP will you receive? 222.107.137.29? This IP is as far as I see located in Korea and most likely not the right one for DB.

I get 75.101.142.97, which resolves to Rockton, Pennsylvania (USA)...Amazon.com (ec2-75-101-142-97.compute-1.amazonaws.com). I assume that's the Amazon S3 cloud Dropbox uses?

    Hello Robert,
ok, there is several possibilities which IP you can resolve, but the one I posted above is not the right one but was included in a post above.

Users that have some knowledge about this will be able to check something like this, but as not everyone is knowing these things I was just asking to ping the domain to see what ip will be resolved.

For dl.getdropbox.com it'll be one of theses:

    A dl.getdropbox.com 174.129.242.127 60 min
    A dl.getdropbox.com 174.129.33.163 60 min
    A dl.getdropbox.com 75.101.136.120 60 min
    A dl.getdropbox.com 174.129.33.139 60 min
    A dl.getdropbox.com 75.101.142.97 60 min
    A dl.getdropbox.com 75.101.148.191 60 min
    A dl.getdropbox.com 174.129.212.16 60 min
    A dl.getdropbox.com 75.101.129.115 60 min
    A dl.getdropbox.com 174.129.33.164 60 min
    A dl.getdropbox.com 174.129.33.159 60 min

Robert, do you have problems to open the public links above?

dl1.getdropbox.com till dl10.getdropbox.com seems to give also one of the ips above, it is just one IP per subdomain.

If someone like to check by himself, just go to http://www.mxtoolbox.com/ and enter a:dl.getdropbox.com in the field, with the a:

@ Robert, do you have problems to open the public links above?

I was able to access the October newsletter (http://dl5.getdropbox.com/u/270183/OcotberNewsletter1.pdf).

But not the September newsletter (http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/270183/SeptemberNews.pdf) which resulted in:

    Oops! (404)
We can't find the page you're looking for. Check out our FAQ or forums for help. Or maybe you should try heading home.

I have no interest in these newsletters per se but you certainly got my attention when you indicated there was a public Dropbox pointer to an IP Korea!

Ok, the September newsletter probably is not stored under this address (anymore) so it is not found, the Dropbox website gives you a 404 because of this. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_404)

There is not IP in Korea in the DNS configuration of DB, that means that the nameserver used by Andrew is not good. If the DNS is maintained by the Internet provider than he should inform them, in any case he should use another DNS if it is like this.

    If I ping dl.getdropbox.com I get [211.233.91.10]

"the nameserver used by Andrew is not good. If the DNS is maintained by the Internet provider than he should inform them, in any case he should use another DNS if it is like this"

Sorry I'm kinda a newbie with these DNS stuff, can you elaborate a little bit on the "he should use another DNS if it is like this" part?

    Thanks again~!

    Hello Andrew,
it is really strange that the DNS entry seems to be wrong. Can you try pinging some of the other domains? dl1-dl10, not all, lets say 3 various.

Are you on a network at your home? Is there more than one computer or do you use a router to connect to the Internet, such as a (wireless) LAN router?

    Hello,

I am in Korea... our organization (International School) has also had similar problems using public links over the last couple of weeks. Per this discussion:

    - I am able to open the newsletters mentioned above
    - I am not able to successfully ping any of the ip addresses that Rene S. mentions above
    - I also get 211.233.91.10 as a reply when I ping dl.getdropbox.com
    - I am not able to successfully ping dl1-dl10
    - I have experienced the same problems from home (wireless lan) or from school

For example, this link (from my account) doesn't work here:
    http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/325069/UbD%20Training%20of%20Trainers%20in%20Singapore.mov

Frankly, this makes the pro account that I purchased obsolete.

    Any suggestions?

Let's see if the support or DB team will answer something here, maybe one of you guys having the problem can ask to the support and link to the article here.

I am far from being a professional, but it looks as the fault is not on DB side, it seems to be some creepy routing problem.

To the people ending up with 211.233.91.10 when pinging, do you get a positive answer or will it tell you something with host not reached? I don't know the exact word order for the response, but there is one which will be given by other than destination host.
Are you guys all from Asia receiving the Korean IP address?

I get a positive answer when pinging:

    Ping has started…

    64 bytes from 211.233.91.10: icmp_seq=9 ttl=242 time=5.102 ms

    --- dl.getdropbox.com ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
    round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 3.895/7.655/30.615/7.708 ms

I've confirmed that this is happening in Korea in at least 3 different cities.

This IP does not belong to Dropbox there is no reason why it ends up at this address. The IP above belongs to http://www.kidc.net/eng/ which seems to be a webservice company in South Korea.
Anyone have an idea why it is like this?

As a solution you should use a different DNS server. Very easy to change, look at Google.

But of course this will only be a solution for you and not for others as you can not tell them to change DNS before clicking a link.

Someone of the people having the trouble should just send an email to support or to the Korean company were you end up because of the wrong routing. Nobody ask, nobody will change it.

Is there censorship in South Korea? I am in China and I know many DNS entries here are manipulated and wrong.
